Simple Security : Keeping It Dumb

1. Lock down your PDA.

I was at a seminar a few weeks ago and during a
break the guy sitting next to me got up and left
the room leaving his Palm Pilot sitting there.

Now I didn't touch it but I kept thinking about it over
the next couple of weeks. My own Handspring is packed
full of info that I wouldn't want anyone else to have
privy to. Phone numbers, passwords, client info, and
personal things that are no ones business but mine.

I went looking for security software that would be
tight but not interfere with the convience of a PDA.
Palm has been promising security for years but
nothing has come to bear. Most 3rd party software
looks and feels like it was written in a garage with
a leaky roof. I wanted something professionally
done and a product would be around more than
12 months.

I found what I think is the perfect fit. MovianCrypt
from Certicom (www.certicom.com) utilizes
strong data encryption and integrates an advanced
password-based user login system to achieve total
database security.

Transparent to end users, movianCrypt, encrypts data
as it is stored and decrypts as it is accessed.
Third-party applications run unmodified on
movianCrypt enabled devices.

Of course none of this matters if your password is
easy. You need 10 digits and if you use words
change some of the letters to numbers. Never
use a full word that is in a dictionary.
