I recently saw an exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts by local artist "Chris Mars", entitled Subderma: New and Recent Paintings by Chris Mars. Chris as you might know was the drummer of the Replacements. I don't call him the 1st drummer because anything after Bob Stinson got fired is simply not the Replacements.
Chris's artwork fits into some crossover world of horror/sci-fi/fantasy. His characters look as though they have somehow survived a 3 week stint in an outhouse pit learning to breath the toxic fumes. Others look like horror ride clowns with miss matched eyes and peeled skin.
Most of the paintings contain an group of the creatures Some of the characters appear as just blurred images, while others are just slimy tentacle covered bloody creatures. The backgrounds of these paintings resemble a burned out a apocalypse.
For the most part I thought his paintings look great but thinking back I couldn't pick out a single painting that stood out. There was one painting that was portrait of single monster/man and it left me wanting more.
