Mr. Potato Head

The Ticking
by Renee French
a graphic novel
Top Shelf Productions

"Edison Steelhead was born on the kitchen floor. His mother did not survive him."

So begins the life of Edison Steelhead, a deformed boy raised by a deformed father. But the deformity of father and son that makes them look like a cross between a salamander and a potato is the only thing they share.

Edison excepts his looks and finds beauty in the strange and wonderful things on the lighthouse island that serves as their family's shield from the outside world. His father on the other hand sees their deformities as something wrong and that needs to be corrected. Unable to accept Edison's outlook on life the father seeks companionship in a chimp that will simply do as trained.

With "The Ticking" we find Renee French's oddball creativity and morbid curiosity bring us to a warm story that we seldom see. Not only do we share in Edison's ability to except himself for what he is, but we see his father's inability to except both himself and finally Edison.

Back In Black

I am back from Phoenix, AZ. If you have any water to spare, they need it.

Actually I had a relaxing time and managed to come back with no tan. I went to usual places; pool, nap, reading chair, coffee shop, taco stands and a little hiking.

As usual the stand out was the Scottsdale Contemporary Art Museum. The Petah Coyne exhibit was very cool. Her tools are some of my favorites. Horse hair, chicken wire and wax. The show was a mix of sculptures and sculptures. All of this was very haunting.

The other nice find was Khepri Comics in Tempe. The owners name was Brian and he has a very cool store. He has been running a online store for many years and has just opened his retail location. Basically his store's top 5 comics are my top 5 comics. What more can you ask for.
